sgd-r35-71x80 Need entire handle set

Quick Learner from Merrimack, NH

Hi there. Long story short. A few years ago, I had a locksmith alter the key lock, on the sgd-r35-71x80 , to match my other home locks. Well, now the door cannot lock from the inside. The mortis keeps sticking. At this point, I don't need a lock to match. Just want a door locking handle and mortis..can you recommend parts?

Hey Liz. It sounds like it's possible the main culprit here is the mortise lock. If you haven't already, try removing the handle set and then manually throwing the lock with a slotted screwdriver. If it doesn't work well or at all, then you know the mortise lock has to go. Our 82-218 should replace it.

Check to see if the tailpiece of the thumb latch as well as the key lock cylinder are damaged. If they and the handle set are otherwise intact, you should be able to reuse it. Did the 'sticking' begin immediately after the locksmith set this up? If so, it's entirely possible the tailpiece of the key lock wasn't cut properly, and it's rubbing up against the tailpiece of the thumb lever. Cutting the tailpiece properly should fix that issue.

Otherwise, I believe our 82-030 should work as a replacement for the handle set. Note that the 82-030's thumb lever is perfectly 'centered' between the two mounting holes, rather than closer to the bottom than the top. I can't entirely tell if that's the case with yours; I think it should be since the key lock on the outside is centered, but it's possible your handyperson installed everything a bit unusually. Note that you'll need to cut the tailpiece of the key lock on this replacement handle set properly as well. The video below shows how to do this for a different key lock, but the principles are the same. Take a look. Let me know if you have any questions about anything I've outlined here.

So the locksmith cut the lock, to match other doors, about 3.5yrs ago. Candidly, we never use the slider in a way where we use the key to unlock the door and enter the house. The slider continues to be used to enter and exit the home to use the backyard and is only locked or unlocked from the inside of the house. To my recollection, we've never used the slider key lock to "lock or unlock" the door. Everything about the handles seems in good working order. No loose parts, screws, or damage. However, once we go to lock up the slider, from the inside, that hook projection is stuck in the down position, tucked inside the door. I can take a small screwdriver and pop it out and then lock the door as normal. I just assumed that the this is all attributed to the work we did on the lock. Perhaps it isn't? Perhaps it's just old age and the moving parts are not moving? If it's simple enough to just order and install a new mortis, I'm good with that. However, I thought maybe it's just easier to purchase the entire handle set, with mortis included, and then I know for sure that everything fits together neatly. I'll go with your recommendation at this point.

Sure, that's a logical course of action. If you just want to play it safe and ensure that everything fits together, then the 82-030 lockset and 82-218 mortise will work perfectly well for you. If you did want a locking version of the handle, just in case, see our 82-030A. Both are fully compatible with the 82-218.

Installing the 82-218 is very simple, but there are two things to keep in mind. The first is that it's made to be a tight fit, so it may feel like it's too big to fit in the door at first. The trick to that is to just put it in at an angle. It should fit right in and then snap in place, allowing you to secure it with screws.

The second thing to consider is that this mortise is a bit infamous for accidentally falling into the door. There's not really anything preventing that from happening during installation aside from how well you're holding onto it. I'll share another video below that shows you how we do it.

Hi Bob,

Some 3 months later and I finally got around to installing the lockset and mortise. Your recommended videos were perfect. Once I got past my own paranoia of dropping the mortise into the door, I was good to go. Smooth installation and operation.

thanks again. Appreciate the help
