simonton pivot shoe questions

Home Owner from NC

Hello.

I am getting some 15-192 pivot shoes. I have a 3-4 broken ones in 20 windows. 11 use the double coil and 9 use the single coil. These were installed in 1/12/2010. Is there a known issue with the pivot shoes that are causing these failures? I ask to determine if I get all new pivot shoes for all windows or just the 11 heavier one's or should I also get the coils, or what??

Thank you

Rich

Hey Rich. That's certainly a little odd since you replaced these so recently. Do the new coils show any sign of wear, or no? Are you certain the spring weights you select are appropriate for the sash weights, and have you had any trouble opening or closing these windows prior to the shoes breaking? What is the condition of the pivot bars? Finally, do you know if this is a Simonton window? If it is, Simonton versions of these shoes have a slightly different metal cam shape than the Certainteed 15-192. We recommend either swapping out the old cam with the one in the new shoes; or, if they're no longer available, to file down the collars of the pivot bars so they fit appropriately.
