I have a channel balance that has a length of 28 3/4" metal end to metal end. it has nowinged guides o the plastic ends

That sounds like it might be a custom balance. To confirm, we'll need some photos. I'd like a clear picture of the top fitting, bottom fitting, stamp, and the hook at the end of the cord.

Please make sure that the balance you show us is whole and undamaged. If any bits of it are broken off or missing, we won't be able to help.
