window balances

Question

my window sashes make a loud screech/squeak and are very difficult to open and close. they are Andersen double hung windows (both sashes move). they are not tilt wash. I believe they were purchased and installed in 1985 (approximately)

Am i correct in assuming that the balances need to be replaced? if so, which balance do I need? below is all the information i have:

visible glass in both sashes is 32 1/2" wide and 24" tall

current balance has the following numbers on it as far as i can tell. its difficult to read: 11600-17 E82 9#27 2 84

is there anything else i should do to get them operating smoothly once again?

Yep, it definitely sounds like you need new balances. I recommend our 24-939. This can replace all Andersen balances marked with "9#27."

There's not much else you need, replacing the balances will get the windows working good as new. That said, applying silicone spray on the sides of the sash track can't hurt.
