how do you determine if the crank is left or right hand cranks

Thanks for posting. The definition of a left or right-handed operator varies from part to part and manufacturer to manufacturer. With the 39-074 and 39-075 Awning Operators however, you can determine this by looking at your old operator from behind, or from the back where the link arm protrudes from. If the bottom tab with the screw holes points to the left, then you need the 39-075 Left-Handed operator. See the picture. Note that the bottom tab points to the left.

If, however, that bottom tab points to the right, you need the 39-074 Right-Handed operator instead. Let us know if you have any further questions. See the picture below. Note that the bottom tab points to the right.
