A quick learner from maryland says:
Hi,

I believe the coil has severed and needs replacing, I see no markings or numbers, this is a large bedroom window and a small kitchen window with the same symptoms ...please advise if all i need to purchase is the coil or exactly what i need, both sides appear to be broken, Im not an expert, but i can follow simple instruction on reassembly

Thanks

bedroom 35w x 58 3/8L

kitchen 34 7/8w x 34 5/8

Our Series 190 coil spring should make for a good  match. Look it over and see if this is correct. There should be some sort of stamped number or marking on the coil itself to help you determine the spring strength of the coil you need. As for the accessories that accompany your coil spring system, I placed a list on this page for you to look over should you need to replace any of that as well.

I have located the markings 540 on the coil, does this sound correct

Yup, sounds correct to me. So you would go with the S190-540 coil spring.
