window springs wont work

Landlord from st paul, mn
Hi, I ordered 8 parts from you. I got the red tips, because the broken ones were also red tip. I installed them and windows don't stay open. The windows are double pane, maybe 20 lbs each. What would be the appropriate tip to order.

Thanks for posting, Ben! A pair of S600-35 spiral balances with Red Tip should be able to hold up a window of that size, so I think that maybe your balances aren't charged enough. Take a look at our instructional video on how to replace this type of balance, which shows the proper way to charge them for use.

OK, I see that you have to "charge" the spring first. Where are these tools sold? Would a pliers do in a pinch?

There is a certain method you can try in a pinch. You would first install the balance into the window without charging it, then re-install the sash, and finally unscrew the balance and try to turn it with your hands at the top, adding tension, before screwing it in. It will be very difficult to do it this way, but it is possible. Just try to keep the turns the same on both sides of the sash. We do recommend using a charging tool, of course. For this Series balance, see our 75-006.
