28HDK Balance Replacement

Home Owner from White Bear Lake, Minnesota
I need to replace the balances in 3 double hung tilt in windows. The metal channel of the balances are 29" long and the markings on the balances are 28HDK. Can you confirm the 29" Series 751 Channel Balance with the 15-014 Shoe (28HD) is the correct replacement part? The balances I've had replaced by a window company have the marking 28H so I'm wondering if there is a difference between "H", "HD", and "HDK".

Also, the balances are nested in a plastic track shown in the attached pictures. Do these tracks have to be removed when I am replacing the balances, or can I just pull out the old balance and snap the new balance into the plastic track? Thanks for your help!

Good Afternoon,

It appears it's the Series S751-29 (28HD) Channel Balance that you'll need.

The "H", "HD" and "HDK" are all the same HD.

To replace the balances, first tilt in the sashes and remove them. The tracks should be loose enough to come out. With the tracks out, you can replace the balances by sliding them outward. They're often hooked at the top, and if a shoe is engaged, use a slot screwdriver and turn the metal knife to disengage it from the track.

To reinstall, slide the balance in from teh top and hook the S-hook at the top of the window track. Now, with the slot screwdriver, bring down the shoe and lock it near the same place where it was.

Then you'll install the track and sashes.
