82-005 ord # 3042499

Home Owner from California

I had to find someone with a camera so I could show you what I'm running into and ask for your help.

Attached is one of the 3 handles installed that I need to replace.   The inner handle is fine but the outer (keyed) plastic is chipping away from the sun and weather on all 3 handles.

By looking at the dims of the 82-306 it appears that it would not cover the existing recessed opening.  Do you have any recommendations?

This is a picture of the recessed opening, the slot is ~9/16" from the edge and ~3/4" wide x ~8" high.

We unfortunately don't have any handle that will cover the hole where the old recessed handle used to go. Pretty much all modern handles are, on average, much smaller than what that hole was made to accommodate.

That doesn't mean that a surface mount handle like our 82-005 can't work, it just means you need to get creative. What I would do in your position is go to a local hardware store and buy a flat metal plate to install over that hole, then install the 82-005 on top of that. I've done this before in a pinch and it works well, even if it isn't exactly pretty.

I'm sorry that we don't have an easier solution for you, but older doors like this just take a little extra handiwork to get functional again.

Tom, thanks for the reply.  I'll continue my quest to find the original mfg of the door handles and if all else fails, jerry-rig it similar to what you described.
