thinking I may need a whole new "mortise lock"

Home Owner from Indiana
I purchased this replacement handle and installed it yesterday. The thumb lever was broken on the old set. The thumb lever works now, but the key is extremely hard to turn and I cannot get enough leverage when the door is shut to get key to turn far enough to lock the door from the outside. I used WD40 on the lock mechanism but that did not help enough. I am thinking I may need a whole new "mortise lock" but fear this is above my ability to install. If you can confirm this may be the problem, I think it's time to call a locksmith! Thank you.

Hello,

It does sound like you need a new mortise lock. If so, take a look at the 82-260 and compare the measurements to your part to see if this would be a good replacement. Thank you!
