90-252 latch replacement challenge

Home Owner from Seattle
I ordered and received a replacement latch 90-252.  I unscrewed the old latch and went to install the new, only to discover that the screw holes had disappeared...  It is unclear whether something inside the window has fallen down or changed alignment, but there is now metal blocking just inside the holes where the screws insert thru the plastic.  The original latch was installed with self tapping screws, so I could possibly try to force them through the metal, but I am concerned about damaging the window or breaking a seal, etc.  Wondering if you have any suggestions for this delimma?

Vinyl window manufacturers do put a piece of aluminum inside the channel to add strength to the sash frame and lock mechanism. You could remove the sash and shift the metal to line up the original screw holes or drill new holes for the screws. Just be careful when drilling, so as not to go too far and hit the glass.

Looks like the metal stiffener bar dropped down into the side rail in your window. If your window frame is screwed together at the corners, you could try taking the frame apart and re-align the metal bar. However, if your frame is welded at the corners, you will not be able to take it apart. Your best bet might be just to drill new holes into the metal or reuse your self drilling screws you took off the old lock.
