Your description is not inaccurate. These old crossbow balances have been discontinued, and one reason we weren't sorry to see them go is because of how fragile they were. Good news is, you can replace them with our sturdier Series 795 Channel Balances. The video below explains how.

I do not know whether I need a closed or open balance shoe. How do you tell which you need?

The only difference between the 15-195 Closed Cam Shoe and the 15-195B Open Cam Shoe is the style of the metal cam. The 15-195 cam has a 'back' wall so you can't see through the other side; while the 15-195B has no back wall, so you can literally 'see through' the back of it. Essentially this difference affects pivot bar compatibility. Let me know if that makes sense or if you have any other questions.
