Broken Coil Spring

Thanks for writing in! To be able to determine how exactly your balances should be assembled and installed in the window, I'll need  a bit more information.

May I please see a photo of the compatible shoe?

In regard to which coil should be installed on the top or bottom, it shouldn't matter much. As long as they are installed in the same fashion on both sides of the window. For example, if you stack the 4lb coil on top of the 3lb coil for one side of the window, you need to do the same for opposite side.

The coil springs could be breaking for any number of reasons. We'll need to first determine if you have the correct spring strength for the weight of you sash. With that said, I'll need to know exactly how much your sash (window) weighs; down to the ounce.

Thanks for the confirming. I just needed to be sure of the type of shoe and coil before giving a recommendation. There should only be one coils spring attached to the shoe and the other should be connected to the springs. It seems that whoever installed the coil assembly previously, did so incorrectly.

Yes, the shoe is correct. Since the window weighs 14lbs, you could stick with the 3lb and 4lb coils or you could use one 7lb coil. That would be up to your discretion. The two sides would just need to be identical when installed.

To determine the exact coil springs you need, I would just need to know the width of your coil spring.

My apologies, the photo you submitted of the coil with the measuring tape isn't clear, unfortunately. Thanks for confirming the measurement. 

I would suggest using two of the S160-3 Coil Balances. They can hold 3.5lbs. Therefore, (2) of them should provide you with 7lbs on both sides of the window to support a total weight of 14lbs.

You may also need the 15-150D Coil Double Support.
