Broken metal pieces hooked in the sides of the vertical frames

The metal pieces are approximately 1.25" in length x .25" in width and allows the window channels to be installed and removed. They hook into a small square opening at the sides of the vertical window frames.

Your photos resemble the 16-002 take-out clip used to remove channel balances in non-tilt windows. Take a look and see how the dimensions compare to your part. Thanks for posting!
