Casement window crank mechanism

Quick Learner from Daleville, VA

Casement window is Twin light horizontal series 850.

This is the left window and opens outside to the left when the cranks is operated. Standing inside the lock or closure mechanism is on the right side. The serrated shaft that is attached to the handle that comes from the mechanism is broken. The shaft with the serrated head broke and the mechanism need replacement. The window is about 13 years old. The factory gave your company name to order the mechanism part.

Thanks for writing in. If the worm gear that the handle attaches to is broken, then the entire operator needs to be replaced. We'd be happy to help you find the right replacement, but we need to see the entire operator out of the window, including the link arm(s). From there, we'll try and find the right replacement. Many thanks.

The worm gear handle is broken. The shaft that is attached to the handle broke (or snapped) inside the handle and the entire mechanism in my opinion needs changing. I am attaching three photographs. The windows were made by Atrium Window Company in North Carolina. The windows are 100% Vinyl windows and were manufactured in 2006. Please enlarge the picture to see the entire mechanism.
Please send the quotation for a replacement mechanism. Thanks.

Thanks for getting back to me. No worries, we should have the right replacement operator. This looks like either our 39-031 and 39-032, or our 39-155 and 39-156. The only difference between these two sets of operators are slight differences in the dimensions of the link arms, so compare both with your old hardware to see if either is the right match for you. Let me know what you find. For a new cover and handle, see our 39-107 and 39-114L

Bob,
1.You are right it is either the 39-032 or 39-156 as it is the left window and the window opens to the outside to my left when I am facing the window from inside the house.
2. How and where do I measure the dimensions of the link arm to determine the right part
3. Another question I have is that the window whose mechanism serrated shaft is broken is in an closed position. If so how do I replace the mechanism with the new part.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for getting back to me. The differences in the link arm dimensions between the 39-032 and 39-156 are shown in the photos on each product's shop page. I have posted them below for convenience.

Dimensions for 39-032
Dimensions for 39-032
Dimensions for 39-156
Dimensions for 39-156
As far as your operator being broken with the window closed shut, you will need to try to manually push the window out. If the gears within the operator are corroded, this could prove difficult; but there aren't really many other options. If all else fails, you could hire a handyperson for assistance. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Great, so you believe you need the 39-156. As far as getting the window open to remove and replace the operator, you will need to try to manually push the window open; i.e. with your hands. If the gears within the operator are corroded, this could prove difficult; but there aren't really many other options. If all else fails, you could hire a handyperson for assistance. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I have determined how to measure the dimensions which is item 2 of my earlier email. It is the second picture.
I still need answer to my question 3 which is "Another question I have is that the window whose mechanism serrated shaft is broken is in an closed position. If so how do I replace the mechanism with the new part."
