Coil Balance for Vinyl Window

Home Owner from Toronto, Ontario, Canada

I need a double coil balance replacement or a substitute ( modern ) which can be used in my single hung tilt coil balance vinyl window. The plastic between the the two coils is broken which stops my window from closing completely and securely. I am not comfortable in removing the broken coil balance to get the coil markings as i may not get it back in. The glass measurement is 21 1/2 inches high X 31 1/2 inches wide. I have three photos attached to assist. Please assist and thanks.

Thanks for posting. I am afraid I'm not familiar with this coil balance assembly at first glance. We need to see the pivot shoe that the coil springs attach to. The pivot shoe should be further down the window track. It's the plastic block to which the coil springs connect to, and from which the window sash pivots from. The identity of the pivot shoe typically tells us the identity of the coil balances needed. If you can send us some clear pictures of the shoe, preferably removed from the window, we'll do our best to assist you.

There's really no getting around removing these assemblies from the window for replacement and maintenance, I'm afraid. The video below goes into detail about how to do this. Take a look for guidance.

Reference # D89435 - Unfortunately, my coil balance is in no way attached to the sash pivot/ shoe. They are independent of each other. I have three identical windows in my bungalow and the col balance are the same and not connected in any way. The current pivot and shoe are both metal as the photos show. These windows were installed about 15 years ago. Attached are some pictures of the sash channels and pivot/ shoe.

Hey Fadil. This pivot shoe looks like an older version that was discontinued not too long ago, but our 15-177 likely can replace it. The 15-177 works with Series 152 Coil Balances. Both the old shoe and the 15-177 absolutely do connect to the coil springs; the tape runs along the side of the window track to connect to the shoe. The coil springs and the shoes must connect, or else quite simply there's no way the coil springs can help regulate the window movement. I'd remove the shoes and springs to confirm the 15-177's width and thickness matches your old shoe (see the diagram below).

You'll then need to compare to remove the old springs and look for stamps on them that designate their spring strength--each individual spring is calibrated to support a specific weight. If there is no spring or you are uncertain, give me the exact weight of the window sash and I can work out the spring weights you need.

First, my sincere apologies for misinforming you with regards to the coil balance and pivot/ shoes attachment. It took someone with much younger eyes to show me the connecting tape running along the inside side of the channel which was difficult for me to see but i felt it. So, apologies are in order. Now, with regards to removing the coil balance and pivot/ shoes, i have to engage someone who is more adept at this than i am. My fear is the window will detach itself when the hardware is removed and will not remain in the channel to keep the rain out if the hardware has to be off for an extended period of time. Without the hardware, can the window still be in place? Your thoughts please and thanks.

Hello, Fadil. The sash will stay in the frame without pivot shoes, yes, it just cannot be opened or else it will immediately fall. That is the major risk: if someone doesn't know the window doesn't have balance support, then they will risk injury if the sash were to then fall on their hands. If you do put the sash back in then I recommend keeping it locked and making sure everybody in your residence knows that it shouldn't be opened until repaired.

Otherwise, the tilt latches at the top two corners of the sash will keep it from tipping forward. As long as it remains closed it should be just fine.

Thank you very much for your great advice. I feel much more at ease. I shall move forward in having the pivot/ shoe removed to take pictures for you.

Greetings, I had the complete coil balance removed from both sides of the window. Attached is a picture showing the front and back of the unit. The length of the unit is about 4 inches and the width is about 1 1/4 inches. If you have a complete system or can put together the individual parts for a complete unit, please advise with price, thanks.

Unfortunately, these coil balance parts are not available as a complete unit but it does look like the 15-177 would be our closest replacement option, as well as the other parts shown under the related items section of our product page. One difference that I noticed is that your cam in the center of the shoe is enclosed and plastic, while ours is open and metal. I would recommend showing us a picture of the pivot bar that engages with your pivot shoe cam uninstalled to determine if it would be compatible with our replacement. We've related a few more videos on this page to assist you.

Good evening, i was able to source a pair of double coil balances locally from a window installer but unfortunately after he installed them the window still would not close completely, so he removed them and closed the window without the balances and the window still would not close completely. Upon further investigations, it was discovered my window vinyl frame was warped and bowed which has prevented it from closing. I have now decided to replace the complete bedroom window as that is my only option. My sincere thanks and appreciation for your valued advice and now i know something about window balances, thanks again.
