My dad has windows in his house that are 50 years old the coil balances broken how do I know what lb.to get. His windows are aluminum double pane. The coil hooks on top the window and the coil is attached to the top frame. I could not find any markings on the spring coil. Although after 50 years of use. I attached photos of the spring and housing and hook.

Seeing as how your window is 50 years old, I believe you have a wood window with coil springs. If that is correct, I'll try to to help you. Can you weigh the sash using a bathroom scale? That would help us determine what strength spring you need.

Window is aluminum single pane and weights 12 lbs.

I see. In that case, I would recommend our S152-6 coil spring. Each spring can carry 6 pounds each. Please note that the width is 1/2" and the travel is 35".
