Coil balance parts

A quick learner from Laxkawaxen Pa says:

Not sure what I need to order. The springs are stamped with the numeral 5. The housing that holds the cam broke. The left side which is broken has two coils and the right side has only one coil. Do I need to replace both sides in pairs?

Thank you,

Joe

The left side has 2 coils stamped #5 and the right side has one coil stamped #8. Here are more photos with measurements.

Thanks for posting. When it comes to coil balances, you only need to replace what's broken. In your case, the only part that appears broken is the shoe, which matches our 15-180

If you needed the other parts, though, then see our 15-182 bushing, 15-186 clip, and then our S190-840 (for the #8) and the S190-540 (for the #5). Just keep in mind that balances should have symmetrical stamps on either side of the sash.

I understand about being symmetrical on both sides. The windows were installed be the builder about 15 years ago. I checked other windows, and none of them (same sized windows) seem to be consistent with the installed balances. Should I just install a #9 one each side of just replace the shoe for now?
thanks

Hey, Joe. I wouldn't guess. I recommend getting the exact weight of the sash, then dividing that between the number of springs used to support it. Since you're using 4 springs, you want to divide the sash weight by 4 and choose the proper stamp.

For example, if your sash ends up being 20 pounds, then you want four S190-540 springs, which carry 5 pounds each. If it's 36 pounds, you want four S190-940 springs, which carry 9 pounds each.

The window is 17.4 lbs. Will the coils spring open once I take the screw off or will it stay compact? Wondering if I should just change entire assembly on each side. Additionally, the pivot bars are "Z" shaped, can they be changed to straight bars? The "Z" shape extends below the window and interfere with window air conditioners.

The springs will remain coiled even if you take off the screw. Unless they've completely sprung apart, and I don't believe they have, then they'll retain their current shape.

We don't have these Z shaped pivot bars, but our 26-040 should work as a substitute. I know that ours doesn't have the same dramatic offset, but believe it or not that doesn't appear to affect the window function. It should all work normally.
