These windows previously had pins on springs, which were pulled back to allow movement of the lower sash. They fit into holes in the track, but this only allowed lifting to pre-specified heights. As well the windows stick, so that manipulating the pin and lifting the sash at the same time was extremely difficult. Other windows in the house, also wood, had spiral balances and are much more easy to use. To make these windows accommodate spiral balances, the pins were removed and channels cut using a stacked dado on a table saw. They are ready for spiral balances, but the length of the balance is the question. I will send pictures separately, as they will be done on a cell phone, of both these windows and the others with pre-existing spiral balances, but the latter are different sizes, so I cannot just measure their spiral balance.

The cut channel will accommodate 3/8 spiral balance. I could recut them, but when I replaced spiral balances on other, bigger windows with pre-existing balances that were broken, used your series 400 balances. These are pretty cheap, probably 1950's windows, and 400 replacements work like a charm, so think I could go with them again.
