Correct Balance Shoe?

Handy Person from NC

Removed my balance shoe with the help of some of your videos. Just want to make sure I have the correct part and that there isn't anything I might be missing. I have several windows where the tops of the balance shoe have come apart and the windows do not stay open. The windows are various sizes, but all appear to have the same balance shoe from what I can tell. House was built in 2007, all vinyl windows. Looks like I need a 15-195B Open Cam. Is that correct? Anything else I might need to fix these?

I agree, this looks like our 15-195B pivot shoe. Keep in mind, however, that damage like this is usually because the springs are failing. You may need all new channel balances. In your case, our Series 795.

Take note that the Series 795 comes with the closed cam 15-195 by default. You would need to purchase the 15-195B separately in each case. The video below shows you how these pop on and off.

Is there a way to tell if the springs are actually failing, a visual indicator perhaps or some sort of test I can do? I was thinking of purchasing enough replacement cams for all of my windows, but if I have to do the springs as well that could be rather expensive.

There's unfortunately no visual indicator that tells you your springs are failing. It's kind of just something you have to get a feel for. If the windows are more difficult to open and close if they once were, and if they're approaching ten or even fifteen years of age, then it's probably time for new balances.

It should still be okay. This is how the manufacturer makes these now, though I can't say for sure why they made the change. Once the balance is installed and working then you shouldn't notice a difference.

I ordered the 795 balances and there is a slight difference at the top where it mounts to the window. Will this be a problem?
