Hello, I am looking to replace the sash balance on one of my Milgard windows.. The metal portion is 21" long x 1/2" wide and marked 2040.

Hello, thanks for posting! It looks like you could have either our S380-21 or S385-21 with the 2040 stamp option. The difference between the Series 380 and the Series 385 lies in the depth of the shoe. Take a look at the picture below for more detail. Once you have determined this dimension you should be able to select the appropriate balance.

Thank you for the response. My concern is the end which has black plastic shoe on it. I don't see any options that look like the one I have.

You do have an older style top fitting, but the 19-005 top that comes with both the Series 380 and Series 385 works perfectly well to replace it!
