Do you have any advice on how to upgrade/fix the types of balances shown in the uploaded pictures? One picture with the string shown nicely tied in is from a working window that stays up when opened. The other picture where the string has come out is where the window doesn't stay up. It's hard to take the picture of the bottom part. Top part is just the string screwed into the frame and there is no housing for the balance as such. Please advice.

Thanks for posting! These appear to be a discontinued style balance that is no longer available. The good new is, we may be able to provide you with a suitable replacement.
To determine if there is an replacement we can provide, I'll need to see a photo of an undamaged balance removed from the window. I am specifically looking to see a photo of any attachments that may be on the balance or that could be connected to the bottom of the sash.
I'll also need to know the diameter of the spring, the length of the undamaged balance, and the exact weight of the sash.

Thanks for your reply. Attached are the pictures of the balance in place and balance removed (without the string unhooked). There is nothing behind the balance. The width of the spring is 0.5 inch. The weight of the sash (lower window) is 20 lbs. It has steel extensions on the bottom sides that go in the shoe of the balance. That shoe is shown in the picture that has the balance out. Sorry, couldn't take the picture of that steel extension at the bottom of the sash. The window height of this single hung window is 3 ft, 9 inches. The existing balance is string, rod and spring based so no stable height to them as such. Please let me know if you need anything else.

I'm sorry to say that the this is still not enough information to confirm the exact replacement balance you'll need. Although, I can narrow down that this is the discontinued Crossbow Channel Balance. The good news is that it can likely be replaced with our Series 795 Channel Balance.
Again, you will need to remove an undamaged balance to confirm the accurate replacement. To determine that these balances will be a situatable replacement, you'll need to obtain a few measurements from your existing balances. These include the length of an undamaged balance as well as the width of the bottom T-shaped attachment (it will either be 1" or 1-1/4" across the bottom of the T shape).
