Need new balances

Home Owner from Orange
Please confirm I need a S385-28 28" channel balance 2730
The metal piece measures 28" and is 9/16" wide
My window weighs approx. 15.5 lbs.
Markings on the metal piece are 27 4 BSI OC
I have replaced some balances at a prior home and you guys/girl were spot on. Current balances may be just be old and stiff or possibly too strong as windows are difficult to close. Thanks in advance for your help, again!

Hey, other Mike! Let's break this down, because it's tricky. The bottom line is that our S385-28 looks close. You'd need a 2740 stamp option. However, there's no way to confirm the Series based on pictures alone. If the shoe is the same size as the 15-004, then you should be fine, but if it measures 1" instead of 1-3/32" as shown, you'll need to get the S380-28. To be sure, carefully measure the shoe as shown below:

Mike,
I measured twice and it looks like I am good with the S385-28 with the 15-004 shoe.

The previous homeowner said he had "someone" replace the balances at some point. Most working windows are reasonably easy to open but many are difficult to close. Your chart seemed to suggest the 2730 as the correct stamp option for the sash weight range of my window, 15.5 pounds. Should I still go with the 2740 as I was already thinking maybe the springs were too strong for the sash weight due to their being more difficult to close than open?
Thanks,
Other Mike

Mike, that's a good catch. You're going to want to go with a 2730 stamp option. When in doubt, match the weight of the sash. As you pointed out, sometimes people simply install the wrong ones, and it's best not to repeat the mistakes of the past. Thanks for choosing SWISCO!
