Need parts!

Quick Learner from Dallas TX

1 window has the light weight hardware.

1 has a 3 coil balance

5 have 2 coil balance.

The little circular metal part on the guide shoe has broken on multiple windows. The metal and plastic have oxidized over the years and they are all just crumbling when I try to put the sash back into the frame. Please help.

The measurements below are for the appropriate dimensions of the sashes

1. 29W x 16.5H (Laundry Room) This is the only single coil window.

1. 42W x 35H (Living-room Side) This is the only 3 coil window as it is the largest

5. 1. 33W x 35H (Front of the house windows) There are 5 windows with the 2 Coil balances. They are all the same size.

Basically, I'm having problems with the brake/guide shoes breaking apart when I remove any of the sashes for cleaning. They appear old and worn out, who knows what precious home owners put them through. But I need to get the parts to do all of the windows listed above. So hardware for 7 windows total. And I was hoping to have the correct pieces on order today. I took one of the assemblies out but see no part numbers on anything. Can I add pictures?

Hello! I think we can help with these parts, yes. The pivot shoe sounds like it's the primary issue here, so my recommendation would be the 15-177. This matches yours pretty closely but you should check our dimensions just to ensure that they line up.

We also sell the springs, in case you need them. That'd be our Series 152. However if your old ones are still in working order, there's no harm in reusing them with the new shoe. Shouldn't be any issues aside from the fact that they probably only have a few years left before you run into similar issues. Once the shoe fails, the springs aren't far behind.

The plastic covers can continue to be reused as long as they aren't damaged. I would advise doing that anyway, as your exact style isn't made anymore and it would just make your project a lot easier.

According to the sizes I have already provided, can you just tell me what the full set of replacement hardware would cost for each of these windows. I am most likely just going to replace the whole batch on each window. I don't like reusing things that I been removed where the worn out part has such poor signs of long life remaining!

Also, you mention another set of dimensions. Are you referring to the size of the track? I can tell you that the brake assembly is 1.25 wide and .5 inch thick. I'm assuming it's pretty standard. Would it help to have a picture with the little post that is on the window sash that goes into the brake?

I'm afraid we don't sell these in full sets, we only sell the individual components separately. I'm also not able to tell you what Series 152 weight options you would need based on the window sizes alone. For that, you need to refer to the stamp printed on your original spring. The weight should be printed near the end of the band.

I'm not sure what other dimensions you might be describing in your response here. The only dimensions I referred to were those of the pivot shoe itself, which I posted above. If those are the same, then our 15-177 will work.

Since you don't want to reuse your old covers, then you will need to use the following components. You will need one of these three components for each spring:

The barrel goes inside the spring, and then the bushing and bushing cap snap over it. Think of it like a sandwich. As I mentioned before, these components are only sold separately and are not available in a set.

Your next step should be to check the stamp on each spring and pick the appropriate Series 152 strength option in each case. If there is no stamp, or if they're too worn out to read, then you will need to do a little more homework. Get back to me if that's the case and I will advise.

All prices can be reviewed on each product's respective store page, linked to in my responses.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your time on this ticket. I think you hit the nail on the head. The brakes you recommend are probably all I need for now.

Actually, the old covers seem to be in pretty solid shape. I think they'll fit right back in. Same goes for the springs. How do these ones look to you? One last question that I think I may already know the answer to. I suppose there really is no way to change those brakes without removing the spring assemblies first?

Looking at your photos, everything appears to be in pretty good condition except for the shoes. I think you'll be perfectly fine just replacing those and reusing the rest. While it can seem annoying at first to have to assemble these yourself on-site, this is actually a benefit to this type of balance. It's the only style where you can get away with just swapping out the broken bits.

Now, as I said before, when the shoes break it's usually a sign that the springs aren't far behind, but I'm sure you can squeeze another year or two of use out of them, maybe more depending on how frequently the window is used.

As for removal, you will have to take everything out in order to replace them, unfortunately.

Just found one of the little locks broken on one of the windows as well. I'm guessing you have parts for that as well.

This part is called a vent latch. We do sell a small selection of these, but your style isn't one that's made anymore. Our 26-122 is probably going to be our closest match, but the white color option is sold out and will not be made again. We currently only have beige and black.

If you don't mind the difference in colors, then this is likely our best bet. Just make sure the dimensions all match up.
