Need replacement coil balance
Hello there. Could you show us the pivot shoe farther down the track that the coil springs connect to? The identity of the pivot shoe determines the identity of the coil balances you need, so we should be able to narrow this down from there. Many thanks.
Thank you, this is a huge help. It's tough to make out exactly what style this shoe is, but based on what I see then the the spring you need is the Series 152. These have a 1/2" wide band and are exclusively used with this style of pivot shoe.
Your next step is to remove the original hardware so that you can confirm both the width of the band and the weight stamp that's printed on it. These are essential details, so there's no getting around it, unfortunately. Removal of the current hardware before purchasing the new parts is necessary.
As for the shoe and cover, as long as the originals are still in good condition then they can be reused. If you did need to replace any of them, though, let me know. Your exact parts aren't made anymore but we sell modern equivalents that will work just as well.
If you also wanted new pivot shoes and new covers, then we can definitely help. See our 15-177 for the pivot shoe to start out; the design is different from your original but it will work just as well. Your shoe is an older, obsolete version that our 15-177 replaces as the modern option and they work identically.
As for the cover, this style isn't made at all and the newer version is a little more involved. Its actually made of three components, which are sold separately: see our 15-143 bushing, 15-144 bushing cap, and 15-145 support barrel. These components "sandwich" over the spring and act as a cartridge to hold it in the window.
If your old covers are still in good condition then you may want to consider just reusing those, since it would be simpler. Otherwise the above parts will be perfectly suitable.
Yep, that's right. You should also look over the hardware I've suggested so far and let me know if you have any concerns or doubts. Keep in mind that this is mostly an educated guess; much of your hardware is obscured by the window frame, and while I can make out enough of it to make a suggestion, that's by no means a guarantee. You should verify each product recommended before you buy anything.
Thanks for checking! I appreciate it. If there are no stamps then it's possible that they originals wore away from time and friction. It happens, unfortunately, but there is a way around it.
So, before I go any further, knowing that your band is 1/2" wide has verified that our Series 152 coil spring is what you want. Your next step should be to weigh your sash on a scale and divide that by how many springs in total support the sash.
For example, if your sash is 20 pounds and you have 4 springs (two per side), you would divide 20 by 4 to get 5. That means you want the 5 pound Series 152 option.
The goal is to get your spring weights to add up enough to cover the weight of your sash, and as symmetrically as possible. If you weigh your sash and we don't have a Series 152 strength option that covers it, let me know and we can look into what your options are then. However I don't believe that will be a problem, the weight spread on this particular product is pretty good so you should be covered.
Yes, the sash is the glass panel that the balances are supporting. You want the upward force provided by the coil springs to be equal to the downward force provided by gravity. That will ensure that the sash stays up when raised.
Four 7 pound coils would give you 28 pounds of support, which is too strong in my opinion. Four 6 pound coils, on the other hand, gives you 24, which is only half a pound off your actual weight. I think that will be perfectly sufficient and is my top recommendation.
