New balances are stiff, limited

Quick Learner from Florida

I bought some replacement channel balances (ordered the S395).

The problem I have after installing the new channel balances and sash guides is firstly, the window is difficult to lift and to pull down, but more importantly, the window will only go half way down and I can't figure out what is preventing it from closing. I have taken the window out and reinstalled it several times to no avail. The only markings on the old balances were, 29-6 CA2 CMC 4. I wasn't sure if this designated weight so I removed the window and weighed it before ordering. The weight was 32 lbs. so I believe I ordered the proper balances(option 2960).

I would appreciate any help you may be able to give me.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with the new balances. I will do my best to help, but before we can go any further we need to address the possibility that the Series 395 was not the correct replacement balance for your application. With that in mind, I'd like detailed photos of the original balances.

I specifically need to see these details:

  • Top fitting
  • Bottom fitting
  • Hook at the end of the cord
  • Stamp
  • The connection point between spring and pulley block

This will allow me to verify whether the Series 395 was the right part for the job. Please make sure to show us an undamaged balance, if possible, especially for that last detail.

Assuming the Series 395 is correct, then we can at least take this possibility off the table and focus on other explanations for why you're experiencing these issues.
