Non tilt window spiral balance.

Home Owner from Florida
In your video about identifying the spiral balance in a non-tilt window it states if you can't determine the tip color of the balance then you must weigh the sash which would require removal of the sash from the frame. I have a non-tilt, non-removable single hung window. How can you remove the sash on a window of this type? Seems impossible to do. Please advise.

Hello,

It looks like you have either the S400 or S500 spiral balances, depending on the diameter of your balance tube. To weigh the sash, you would need to release the balances on both sides so that there is nothing supporting the weight of the window. Then, carefully place a bathroom scale on the window sill and lower the sash gently onto the scale. This isn't ideal but it will be good enough to determine the appropriate weight range for your replacement balances. Thank you!
