To remove it, you would stick a putty knife under the top lip edge, push down, and pry it off. Please note: when you do remove the latch, you will probably break it. They're not made to be removed. If you look at 26-148, you will see a spring on the bottom and on the top is a locking pin, both of which hold it in place.
