Questions on installing 795 channel.

Quick Learner

Good Afternoon,

I'm replacing balances on about 10 windows. I bought the 795 channel, but have some questions about installation.

1. The video shows that we screw the ballast into the top of the sash and says that a 26-200 screw plug may be required, but I don't have a square opening at the top of the jamb. How does one install the 795 in that case?

2. The current windows have a tensioned string that maintains tension when opening and closing the window (see photo 'ballaststring") that allows the balance to move up and down with the window. There is some sort of device at the top of the ballast where the string is attached (see photo "ballaststringmechanism"). I see that there is some sort of string mechanism in the 795.  Is there an equivalent mechanism for the 795? Do I have to remove the current string mechanism?

3. On the current windows, I believe the balance moves with the window. If it is attached at the top, how does the balance move?

Do I have the right parts, and, if not, what parts do I need to repair these windows?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for reaching out to us. I'll address your questions one at a time.

1. Does your Series 795 install using a hook? If it does, and if you don't have a square hole to allow for the 26-200, then your balance will likely need to be custom made. I'll require photos of the original to verify.

2. I'm afraid I'm not really sure what you're describing. You mention photos, but I don't see any attached to this post. Would you kindly resubmit your pictures for me to review?

3. The attachment clip at the top is at the end of a cord that extends and retracts from the balance channel as the window operates.

I'll definitely need photos of the original assembly before I can verify whether our Series 795 is a match. Please ensure that the balance is fully removed from the window and in undamaged condition; we can't help you otherwise. I specifically need a clear photo of the bottom shoe, the stamp printed on the channel, and the clip at the end of the cord.

The old balance does not attach with a hook. It seems to flow with the window. The top of the frame where the 26-200 would go does not have a square hole but a string container at the top of the sash attached with a single screw. (Photos attached)

The balance is stamped with "32-3" (See "stamp" photo).

Here are some other photos:

3 photos of the string attachment at the top of the sash. It has a small plug that exposes a screw that can be removed. One photo shows the plug removed and one shows the whole piece removed. (topofbalance1, topof balance2 and topofbalanceremoved).

A photo of the string that attaches from the top of the sash to the top of the balance and a photo of the top of the balance that looks like a block and tackle. (topofbalanceassembly)

The balance has a spring and the block and tackle type string connector. (see "whole balance assembly" photo in next post)

Let me know if you need any other information.

Looking at your photos, your balance does appear to screw to the frame. I can see screw holes in your first and third photo. They appear to be behind that white sash stop, which is removable and not otherwise part of the balance or its function.

Based on what I see here, I think our Series 795 is likely to work as-is. I suggest that you measure the metal channel to determine length and then weigh your sash on a scale to verify the proper stamp option.

Thank you very much for your fast reply.

Just to clarify, I should remove the stop and string and screw the 795 directly into the sash in the current hole where the stop was screwed in?

Is there a spacer similar to the 26-200 available for between the tab at the top of the 795 and the existing screw hole and/or screws available for this purpose?

Thank you very much for all your support.

Just to clear up some nomenclature, you aren't screwing the balance into the sash. The sash is the glass panel that you raise and lower. You're screwing the balance into the track, right where you see those screw holes at the top.

The stop in question is our 26-053A. This isn't even really necessary for the window to function. Once you remove that, replacing the balance should be very simple.

I'm not sure what spacer you might be referring to. You don't need anything like the 26-200 for this application. The screw clip on the Series 795 just goes right on there. You can reuse your old screws without issue, or if that's not possible, you can use a #8 screw like our 33-016. Length may vary, so you should check the length of the original screw to be sure.
