Replace 82-262 with 82-055K?

A home owner from Honolulu says:
I have a door with Trimview lock like your 82-262. Need to replace it with a keyed lock. The keyed version of this lock is discontinued. It looks like 82-055K would fit as a replacement. What do you recommend ?

I can see why you think the 82-055K might work, since it has the same hole spacing and the design is not dissimilar; I am honestly not certain it would though. I suspect there's a risk that the locking mechanism, while similar, might prove too different to fit properly in your door's mortise. I can't say this for sure, as I've never tried this before, nor am I sure if anyone else has attempted it.

It's up to you if you want to give it a go, but the safer option to me would be to switch to a surface-mount handle set like the 82-005. Now you'd have to drill new holes to install this setup (4-15/16"), but because the locking mechanism of the 82-005 is built into the handle itself, this is a very safe and reliable fallback option for situations like yours. Best of all, you can also use the 82-306 Keyed Outside Pull with this handle set, thus giving you a keyed door lock. See what you think.
