Replacement of balance
Thank you for your post. Please see our Series 795 channel balance. This comes assembled with the 15-195, 1-1/4" T-lock balance shoe. We'd like for you to reconfirm your measurement for us. When measuring the balance, please be certain to measure the metal portion of the balance only. As for the stamp on the metal portion of the balance, we'd like to see a clearer shot of the number. I was not able to get a good look at it to read it.
That's one of the reasons Paul asked to see a clearer shot of your stamp. Stamp options indicate the calibration of the spring; in other words, it's a code that represents how much weight your two balances can support. It's very important to get this right since the whole purpose of a balance is to support the weight of your sash.
I see in your original post that you said your stamp was 32-7. That indicates to me a very strong spring. The strongest option for our S795-33 is the 33E stamp, which carries sashes weighing 30 through 34 pounds. I suspect your sash might be heavier.
To confirm, I'd like you to weigh your sash on a scale and tell me what you get. That will allow us to know beyond any shadow of a doubt how strong your balance springs need to be.
Hello! Reading back through this discussion, it seems like we were mostly concerned about how heavy-duty your spring was. However if your sash is only 27.5 pounds then it's not really all that heavy-duty at all. If you look on the S795-33 store page, you can see that our D option carries 25 through 30 pounds, which would be perfectly fine for your sash.
I wonder why the original installers used such a heavy spring for such a medium-weight sash? I guess we'll never know. Either way, the D option is what I recommend.
