broken Coil Balance spring

Handy Person from Brooklyn, New York

The coil balance spring on one side of the window separated from the pivot shoe. The Window was purchased from Homedepot about 9 years ago. It looks to be an American Craftsman 50 series window. There is a number 9 on the pivot shoe as shown in the uploaded pictures. (1) Do you have the replacement parts for this window? (2) One side is bad. Should both sides be replaced? (3) should all of the parts be replaced (Springs, Pivots, etc.)? Please let us know.

Forgot to add that the window weight is approximately 18 pounds Thank you.

Hello,

Your photos resemble the 15-087 housing pivot, which uses the Series 180 coil springs. Your nine stamp and sash weight indicate that you can use one S180-9 coil on each side. Take a look and compare the specifications below and the accessories related on our product pages to yours. Also, note that you generally only need to replace the damaged parts for these types of balances but if they are older, you may want to replace the coils on both sides to ensure that the sash is evenly supported. Thanks for posting!

The pivot looks similar to the part S161 (number 9) that includes the spring. Can the S161 (number 9) be used? Or, is the 15-087 with the S180-9 coil spring recommended? Please let me know. Thank you.

Is there left and right pivot 15-087?

Comparing the width and depth of pivot S161-08 to pivot 15-087 the difference is 1/16 of an inch in both width and depth. It looks like both pivots will fit. The S161-08 would be a little bigger and fit a little more snug. Is it better for the pivot to be more snug? Which do you believe is better? Please let me know and I will order accordingly. Thank you.

We don't recommend using the Series 161 assembly. As a policy, we always recommend you stick with the original hardware the window was designed to use. In this case, that would be the 15-087 pivot shoe and S180 coil springs.

The 15-087 is also non-handed.
