Handy Person from saint louis misouri
I have determned I need the S900-30 I just dont know what color tip I need  Im guessing this is for the weight of the window and thus the force of the tensioner.  Im a little confused , so can you just increase/decrease the amount of windings to control tension

thanks, ross

Hi Ross,

You can adjust the tension in the balance using the 75-006 charging tool; however, if that does not work, you'd likely need to replace the balance. You'll need to start by removing your window sash from the window frame. Then you'll hook the charging tool  to the spiral and remove it from the pivot shoe.

Once this has been completed, let the spiral unwind. Now bring the spiral up to the red tip on the end of the balance tube, hook the charging tool and turn the spiral clockwise about three or four turns. You should feel the tension build; if not, the balances likely need to be replaced. The last stepis to hook the spiral back in the pivot shoe; complete the same process on the other side.

The best way to determine the tip color of the balance would be to first obtain the exact sash weight, as you mentioned. You'll need to remove the sash and weigh it on a scale to get the most accurate number. There is a chart below the product description of the balance that lists the weight range each tip color will support.

Take a  look out our video tutorial below for a detailed explanation on the installation/removal process. Please also see our guide: How to Adjust a Spiral Balance on a Tilt Window.
