Sash weight question

For many balances, such as channel balances, the weight rating for a single balance is meant for the entire window weight. So, for instance, if you have a channel balance and it is rated to support a window sash in the weight range of 8 through 12 pounds, that is meant for the entire window sash weight, not just half of it.
However, coil balances are different. The rating on a coil spring denotes the weight range the individual spring can support. So, if you have a coil spring stamped '8', that means that lone coil spring can support 8 pounds of weight. So in a situation with a coil balance, you're basically dividing the window sash weight in half to determine how much support you need on both sides of the window; e.g., if the sash weighed 8 pounds, you wouldn't use an 8 pound spring; instead, you'd use two 4 pound springs, one for each side of the window.

OK, thanks for clarifying. First, make sure you are measuring the length of the Series 795 metal channel, not the window sash itself. That's the best way to get the proper length. Second, there is usually a stamp on the old metal channel that designates what stamp option/weight rating you should pick. If there is no stamp though, or it is unclear, then you go by the exact weight of the window sash.
Let's assume the balance is indeed 24" long, and you have an S795-24. Then yes, as you pointed out, a 22 pound sash falls right on the border between the stamp of 24C (17 through 22 pounds) or 24D (22 through 25 pounds). Which do you pick? The answer honestly is either would work! If the exact weight was just a hair 22 pound, I'd go with 24C--if it was close to 25 pounds, I'd go with 24D. But if it's 22 on the dime, really either option would work as is there is overlap there.
