Sliding Glass Door Handle and Latch
They could probably be re-drilled is necessary but rather not unless we have to.
The US patent number on the part is 3,596,954
The Canadian Patent Number is 919213
Anyway we are looking for a replacement for this part on this sliding glass door that was installed back in the 1970's
We don't have an exact replacement for this handle set, but the 82-005 looks very similar. Compare and see what you think.
I received the door handle you sent that I had ordered and I'm not very confident that this part is going to fit. As you see in the picture the door handle for my sliding glass door holes are on a 4-1/2 inch maybe 4-5/8 inch center. The part you sent (82-005) looks a lot like the same thing but the holes are on a 5-inch center. So, first off, the holes wouldn't even line up correctly.
Second, the house is a seasonal rental house at Sunset Beach, NC that was built in the 1970's and the part from this sliding door handle is a Citation (Canadian Patent Number 919213 and US Patent Number 3596954). I do not think this is going to work and I won't be going back to the house until the middle of March. 2021.
So, I wouldn't mind waiting until then to see if this will work unless you think you have something that will fit better with holes that match up.
I could always send some more pictures if you think that would help you find a part that fits this better.
I figured the Manufacturer's name and a Patent number would have been easy for SWISCO to match up but apparently not.
On the other hand if I wait until March to go see if this works and it doesn't then it will be past the 30 day return period. So, can you extend your return on this to a 90 day? If not, I'll probably send it back and try again in March and start over again.
Either way, Let me know your thoughts?
I may have to send this back and try something else in March next time I go to that house.
Thank you,
Chris
Hey Chris. Unfortunately, brand names and old codes often can't be cross-referenced with exact replacements. There's just too much variation with this hardware from brand to brand to do this reliably. My recommendation you give the 82-005 a look was based on past discussions with very similar handle sets. Did this door have an internal mortise lock? Even if it didn't, we don't have a handle set with the hole spacing you're describing. The 82-005 is a great 'last resort' handle set because it's meant to work on all sorts of different doors. It's lock is built into the surface of the inner handle. Now, I asked to compare because the 82-005 could very well have different hole spacing than your old handle set; and it it sounds like you indeed will have to drill new holes to mount it. I'm afraid this may be unavoidable, as I have doubts you're going to find your old hardware (it may be no longer available anywhere), and in that case I do think the 82-005 is your best bet.
Sorry for not being clearer earlier, and I hope this helps. If you end up wanting to return it later on anyway, let me know here in the discussion and I'll talk to our customer service department about it.
