Unique Balance

Quick Learner from USA

Hello,

Attached are 4 photos in a .zip file. They show the broken balance from my Bonneville double hung window.

These are 30" long balances with a pivoting knife like sash pin catch.

There is a moving truck with a double white vinyl roller held within a metal U-shaped wheel holder. It is that metal U-shaped traveling truck that failed, along with the upper pin holding the top of the spring. The spring is not in the photos.

I would order four of these.......two for the failed pair on the lower sash and two for spares.

The knife like sash pin pivot at the very bottom of the screen is not damaged. So if these are not available would it be possible for me to remove the one that comes on the replacement balances and string my old ones in place?

This balance looks like one of your 30" balances except for the bottom connector.

Thanks.

Hello! Your balance appears similar to our Series 751, but with a plain channel instead of a ribbed channel. This isn't a stock option but we can supply this to you as a custom order, regardless.

Before we go any further, I need more details. First, can you tell me how the balance installs at the top? Is it with a screw or a hook?

Can you also tell me the precise weight of the sash, down to the ounce?

Once I have that information, I can email you a purchase link and price quote that will let you add 4 to your cart.

Okay. Back home. Here is the window data and a lot more photos.

The following data is for the lower sash with the broken balances. The upper sash is pretty much identical but the balances for that are in good condition. This window only gets opened a couple times a year so the lower sash balances are nearly always under tension.

  • Sash weight.......31 lbs.
  • Sash dimensions........30-1/2"w x 33"h.
  • Weight is to the nearest 1/2 lb. My scale only reads in 1/2 lb. increments.
  • Dimensions are to the nearest 1/16".

This link is where you can download 13 more photos. The shots are pretty obvious as to what they are but if you have a questions just let me know what photo number it relates to.

I've uploaded 5 of the photos in this submission form. They all can be viewed at my website link above.

I've included shots of the overall vinyl channel the sash balance slides into. The vinyl channel/balance in this group of photos is for the upper/outer sash and is not broken.

You will see the upper and lower sash vinyl channels in the window opening edge view photos. They are separated by a removable parting bar. One photo shows the bar in place and one shows the bar removed. The outer vinyl channel has the balance in place. It has been removed from the inner channel.

I am retired and this is for my own home. However I have a lifetime of experience in the building trades so should be able to answer any technical question you may have for me.

Thanks,

Bernard

Thanks so much, Bernard! This information is a HUGE help. I appreciate your thoroughness.

I feel pretty confident that our 30" long Series 770 can work for your window, but with custom alterations. I'll go through them one at a time.

  • We would replace the square metal terminal clip at the end of the cord with our 15-014 knife lock shoe in black.
  • We would remove the screw plug at the top and put a rivet in its place, in the top hole. This will allow you to reuse the original S-clip, or buy a new one (either the short 19-029 or long 19-030). These hooks are sold separately.
  • We would use the 30E stamp option, which carries 29 through 33 pounds.

So what I'll do now is email you a purchase link and price quote that will let you add 4 of these balances to your cart. They will be made to this configuration, though note that the S-clips are sold separately. If you can't reuse your original for whatever reason, don't forget to add one of these sizes to your cart!

Please let me know if you had any other questions and I would be happy to assist.
