Window Balance Question

Quick Learner from USA
I have double hung windows. The pane is 28 pounds. The existing channel balance is 24" long and is hooked on an opening below a screw hole (see picture 4). The screw hole is 1" above the opening, so do I get a 24" long replacement, or do I get a 25".
Thanks

Hello,

Your balance resembles the S770. If the metal channel measures exactly 24" long, you would need the S770-24. With that being said, it looks like your balance uses an S-clip like the 19-029 or 19-030 for installation while ours install using a screw at the top of the channel. We can supply these balances with a rivet at the top to accommodate the S-clips but it would need to be a custom order.

To get started, we'll need to know the number of balances you need, with the minimum being two. We'll also need to see the number stamped on the balance channel since a 28-pound sash is supported by 24E or 24F strength options as shown below. Thank you!

24E: 25 to 28 lbs

24F: 28 to 30 lbs

Casey,

I'm having trouble for some reason getting the picture from my phone to send to you, it has 24E TK on it. Please explain to me why you are saying to put hooks on it as a special order instead of just screwing it to the upper hole. When I get the picture I'll send it if you still need it.

Thanks,

Jim

Your last photo shows an s-clip that attaches the top of the balance to the jamb liner, which requires a rivet at the top that our balance doesn't have. We can attach a rivet but it will be a custom order since the rivet will be added in-house. Just let us know if you'd like to move forward with the 24E stamped custom balances and the number of replacements you'll need.

Casey,

I understand that, but there is a hole above the slot for the hook, could I attach yours to that

hole? Which brings me back to my original question, since the hole is an inch higher, do I stay with the 24" or do I go to a 25" to keep the bottom in the same place.

Thanks,

Jim

We can't tell you why there is a hole above the installation point of your original balance but we do not advise trying to install different-length stock balances above the point where the original balance are installed. Many factors go into the type of balance the window manufacturer decides to use and changing the design, even slightly, can lead to damage to the new parts or the window itself. It's ultimately up to you if you want to try using the stock S770 balances but it is not something that we would be able to advise you on since they are not intended to install in your window.

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know.

Great! Now we'll just need to confirm the number of 24E stamped balances you need, with the minimum being two, if you'd like to move forward with the custom order.
