Window Balance replacement

Question

The coil has an 8 stamped on it. I want to replace the coils though because the window is so hard to both open and close. The window weighs 13 lbs.

Thanks for posting. This looks like a Series 140 Coil Balance system. A system stamped '8' would be the S140-08 8 pound system. However, you indicate the window is hard to open and close. Has it always been this way? if so, it might be because the coil springs are too strong for the sash weight-that would be the case if the sash weighs exactly 13 pounds. See instead then the S140-07 7 pound spring. One of these on both sides of the sash will give you 14 pounds of support, close enough to the 13 pound weight. Let me know if you have questions.
