Window Channel Balance Parts

1) You'll need to know what Series of Channel balances you need. Channel Balance Series are determined by the style of the attachments at either end of the metal channel. For instance, in the photos you show you have either a Series 380 or Series 385 Channel Balance. he only difference between these two Series is the 'depth' of the bottom nylon shoe. With the Series 380 the depth of this nylon shoe is 1", whereas with the Series 385 it is 1-3/32". Compare with your own and see what is best. If these attachments differ with each set of balances you need to replace, you'll want to compare end attachments with what we have listed on our shop page here. 

2) Once you know what balance Series you need, you must select balance lengths. The best way to determine this is to measure the length of the metal channel--do not include the end attachments in this measurement. 

3) Finally, you must pick a stamp option for each balance length. Stamp options indicate the kind of weight a balance is calibrated to support. For instance, for a S385-30, a stamp code of 29 5 conforms to our stamp option of 2950, which is for a window sash in the weight range of 28 through 32 lbs. To answer your question, no, you should not use balances meant for heavier weights in your lighter windows. Quite simply, they will become difficult to close. Conversely, if the balances are too weak for your window's weight, then it will be difficult to open. It is important to choose a stamp option that supports your window sash's weight.

It sounds like some of the stamp codes on your balances may not be reliable. You say your windows are different sizes. If so, they should not all be marked with a stamp number starting with 29-, as these first two numbers refer to the height of visible glass in the window. Similarly, any stamp option ending with -9 is from an older rating system that we no longer use. In these cases, the best thing to do is to weigh your window sash. You can then match that precise weight with one of the weight ranges listed for each stamp option on the product page.

OK, thanks for all the information. OK, now I understand what you meant by different sized windows. The lower sashes in all your windows have the same height; hence, all the balances are the same length. The upper sash dimensions are not relevant to determining these balances.

I am not quite certain what you mean with your various nylon shoe measurements--but if you mean the depth of the shoe, from the toe to butt, is 1", then all your balances should be our S380-30. Confirm this to be safe. If this dimension is 1-3/32", you need to see our S385-30 instead.

As far as your stamp options go, this is a little weird. All your measured weights don't match the original stamp codes--some by a considerable margin. Did you have a lot of trouble opening or closing your windows before this? If yes, then perhaps the stamp codes were inaccurate to begin with. If you are confident in your measurements, then match the weights you measured for each balance with the weight ranges listed for each stamp option on the product page. 

For the window sash you couldn't get out, I'm not certain it will be the same option as the 29-5s, as its possible the glass may be heavier. I recommend laying your bathroom scale on the sill and then gently lowering the sash onto the scale. This isn't perfect but you still ought to be able to get a measurement doing this. Once you know what stamp options to choose, you should be ready to go.
