Window balance spring

Question

There is a marking that either says 6 or 9 on it, but not entirely sure. I purchased the 9 lb series 140 quick-tilt, but upon installation I found that it made the window very difficult to close.

Thanks for posting. Sorry to hear the Series 140 did not work for you. See our Return Policy here. This looks more like the 15-180 Pivot Shoe, which uses Series 190 Coil Balance springs sold separately. For the replacement springs you have to choose a spring weight, which is typically denoted by a stamp on the old spring. Unfortunately it is indeed impossible to tell if your stamp denotes a 6 or a 9! Weigh the window sash these balances support. Give me that exact weight and I can work out what you need.
