Window spring balances

A handy person from Evansville Indiana says:
We have some windows that the spring balances have become too weak to hold the windows up. They are the 5/8 X 32 and have the red tip on the bottom. The window has two of these springs and weighs 20 pounds on it's own. I'm thinking that the manufacturer put the lightest weight spring to save cost and am wondering if we'd be better off getting the blue tips. What are your thoughts?

Paul from SWISCO responded:
That actually has been known to happen sometimes, but for a 20 pound sash a Red Tip option should be fine. You may just need to wind the spiral balance up so that it regains some tension. See the guide below for more information.
