Wood Window Friction Shoes

Question

I have 24 31x74 wood double hung windows installed in 1999. Every one of the friction shoes on the bottom sashes has broken. I believe the 15-104 shoes will fit but have a question about anchoring the top of the springs. The upper sash spring is on an s-clip but the lower sash spring appears to have been bent and pushed onto the top of the jamb. Is there a reason for this or does it look like the result of a questionable repair in the past? My question is, should I anchor the same way or get s-clips for the bottom sashes? Also the springs are nearly the same size for both top and bottom. Not hard to see why they all broke with that much tension. Is that normal? Thanks

I'm afraid we can't say for certain. I would imagine these were all originally installed with S-clips but someone did a very half-hearted repair. However, that is an educated guess. It appears you should be able to use the same S-clip but our 19-029 may also be worth considering.

It's normal for springs to be the same size for the top and bottom sash, assuming that the sashes themselves are the same size. However, if the top and bottom sashes are of differing sizes then it's a little odd. I hope this helps.
