there's an imprint that says 1420 on the metal part. the balance is 16" long.

This information doesn't identify the balance. Please use our channel balance guide to figure out what you need, or send photos. I also greatly doubt that the balance channel measures 16" if the balance says "1420." Re-measure. I expect you need a 15" balance.

You may be right. I think I included the plastic ends in my measurement. Will measure again. But if 15", what should I get?

I don't know what balance you need yet, because you haven't provided any information that identifies the balance. "1420" is just a spring indicator. The balance itself has an unrelated part number. Use our channel balance guide to identify your balance. The identity depends entirely upon the plastic attachments.

Thank you! Based on these photos, I would recommend our S395-15 channel balance with a 1420 option.
