double hung coil balance

Landlord from Oakland, CA
Hello, I hope you can please help. We have several broken coil balances, but I'm not sure which style or series is the correct replacement. We could not locate any stamps or markings on the coil. Attached is a photo of an intact balance. Can you please advise what series or style to use or what the next steps are in trying to figure it out. We can weight the sash if necessary to get the correct strength balances.
Thank you for your help.

Hello,

We'd be happy to help but we would need to see photos of your coil springs and the pivot show that they connect to removed from the window to compare to our inventory. There should be numbers stamped on the base of the coil. If not, we'll need to know the exact weight of the window sash to determine the correct strength options for your replacement coil springs. Take a look at the videos related on this page to help you through the process. Thank you!

Hi again, more info and photos that I hope can help identify the correct parts. It's a double coil system and the support appears to be similar to the Titan Dual Support, 15-260. One of the coils has a mark of "4" in the photo. The coils are 1/2" wide. The sash weighed in at 22 pounds. Also, two of the photos show the pivot shoe.
Thank you for your help.

Thanks for getting back to us. Your pivot shoe actually looks like a closer match to the 15-111. I would recommend removing your shoe from the window to compare to the specifications below. If it's a match, you'll need two S160-5 coil springs for each side of the window to support a 22-pound sash, along with the 15-150D double supports.

Thank you for the quick reply. Can I re-use the existing supports which appear to be in good shape rather than get new supports? Can you please let me know what the "4" marking is for on the coil spring photo I sent. The reason I ask is that there is a shorter window that will likely have a different marking, so it would be good to figure out how to match it up. I have several windows that need balances, so maybe the best thing is to start with four, two on each side of one sash to see if they work, and then buy the remaining coil springs. Thanks again for your help.

You should be able to reuse the original supports as long as they are in good condition. The 4-stamp would generally correspond to 4 pounds of coil strength but the combination of strength options that you use doesn't matter as long as it supports the weight of the sash. I recommended using two S160-5 coils on each side since each will support 5-1/2" pounds, which would be a total of 22 pounds between att four springs.
