replacement sliding door latch/lock

Question

It looks like I need the 82-260 door latch/lock. But I can't figure out how it goes back together. Is there an exploded diagram or assembly instructions? When I put the handles up to the latch, the blades on both the inside and outside handles (at the lock knob and key) are in the same place, but both won't fit through the same slot. Shouldn't they each go through their own slot? Or does one not go into a slot, but into the square cutout? Which of these 2 photos looks right? Please help!

In my experience, the key tail and thumb lever tail on your handle set should go into the same slot. When you say they can't do that, can you describe what's happening? Is one tail pushing the other tail out?

I would start by putting the mortise lock back in the door oriented how it was originally, then installing the handles on their original installation holes. It should line up how it was to begin with.
