replacement spring ballast

Home Owner from Rochester, NY

Hello.

Trying to find a replacement spring ballast for my mother-in-law's double-hung window. Measurements of the old ballast are: 1 1/4" wide; 1/2" deep, as close as she can figure. Cannot find a manufacturer. Enclosing picture of label in the window with some identifying numbers, also separate pix of the ballast (top & bottom) still in the window. The problem with the piece is that the U-shaped metal piece has broken.

Hope you can help us out with an appropriate part. Thank you.

Hi there Bob.

The 15-177 is the pivot shoe I recommend. For new springs, see the S152 which are sold separately. You'll want to check the spring tongue for a stamped weight code as well. If there isn't one, you'll have to divide the sash weight by the total number of springs in the window.

Hi Emily,
In the past when I've replaced the ballasts (on my windows), I've replaced the whole thing, so I hadn't really considered replacing just the pivot shoe.
Is that hard to replace? Do all springs connect to the shoe the same way?
I imagine that I have to remove the entire ballast anyway, yes?

Sorry for all the extra questions, but you surprised me with the shoe replacement recommendation!

Thanks very much for your time!

Replacing the pivot shoe is pretty straightforward. If your window track doesn't have an existing cut out to remove the hardware, you'll have to make your own as shown in the video below. Our Series 152 springs attach to the side of the shoe with a screw like the 33-072

I also posted another video below that goes over the steps of replacing this type of balance. The featured pivot shoe is different, but the principle is essentially the same.
