sash balances for sliding windows

Quick Learner from Bradenton
I have a bunch of windows with broken balances. Mostly it's the plastic clips that are broken, but in some cases the channels are bent and pins broken. I want to replace them all (7 windows total). The existing balances are 1/2" wide and have 28c written on them. Can you advise what product I need to replace these with?

Thanks for posting. I am confident we can help, but we will need to see clear photos of the nylon attachments at both ends of an undamaged channel balance in order to properly identify it for you. If you also need the Top Sash Guides, or nylon blocks in the top corners of the sash that hold the balances in place, please remove one and show us photos of it from the front and side. We should be able to narrow this all down for you thereafter.

I know it's been a month... but I got some pictures, including the nylon attachments at each end :)

28C is stamped into each metal balance. Does this give you enough information to identify these pieces?

These photos are great, thanks. Based on what I see here, you have either our S380-29 or S385-29, depending on the depth of the bottom shoe. That's the only difference between them. I recommend measuring your shoe and referring to our dimensions to confirm the best match.

Hi Bob, we measured it but it looks like it's 7/8" - would that be a different part?

Also, the products you link to are described as 29" but our parts are labelled 28C - is this one of those things like a wooded 2x4 not actually measuring 2x4?

Thanks,
Ed

We offer the 15-029 bottom fitting that measures 7/8" deep but it would need to be a custom order since it does not come attached to any of our stock balances. Also, keep in mind that these types of balances stamped with 28C would generally have a 29" long metal channel not including the end fittings. Once we confirm that is the case and if you would like to purchase a total of 14 custom balances for all seven windows, we'll be happy to send over an order link and price quote.

Ok understood - yes I'd like to order 14 of those please. I wasn't quite sure which sash weight range option would best line up with the existing balances - I guess the "C" in 28C might give you the information you need for that?

Would it take much longer to fulfill the order with the 7/8" boot? If it means weeks of lead time I'd probably gamble on the 1" existing product, but if it's fairly quick then the custom approach seems the way to go.

Cheers,
Ed

The 28C stamp on your assembly would generally correspond to 2830 options for our balances, which will support a sash between 16-23 lbs. It also looks like we currently have the parts in stock to make these balances for you. Take a look at the order link and price quote we just sent over. You'll be given multiple shipping options to choose from at checkout.
