window balance identification

A quick learner from Auburn, California says:
I have a 20 year old Milgard window and the cord has broken, so I wish to replace the entire unit, unfortunately it is difficult to determine exactly which model it is. Attached are photos which should help provide the answer. Metal to metal the unit is 18" long. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Mark

This appears to be either an S380-18 or S385-18. The only difference between these two balances is the depth of the bottom nylon shoe, so compare both with your old hardware to see what matches best. The picture below illustrates the difference. For the Series 380, the shoe is 1" deep; for the Series 385, it's 1-3/32" deep.

In either case, you'll need to select a stamp option of 1740.

Hello Bob, thanks for replying to my request for identification of my balance. Your choices were either 1 inch or 1 3/32 inch. After using my precision calipers, it turns out that my balance has a measurement of 1 1/32". I will let you decide which balance is correct for me. Then I'd like to order two. Thanks Bob. Mark

If your balance shoe is over 1", then you want the Series 385. It was probably once 1-3/32" originally and wore down over time.
