window balancer replacement parts
I have two windows with broken window balancers. Unfortunately, I'm unable to remove windows to ID part numbers - the clips are rusted and I've watched DIY window removal videos until the cows came home. Both windows are 26 1/2 wide x 27 high. The look like different generations of Milgard. Window 2 has line and I can't tell if Window 1 is line or spring. Your knowledge is appreciated. I plan to buy order parts and hire someone to replace. It's about to get hot and I live in the upstairs of a 1908 house. Yikes!
Thank you so much,
Linda
Thanks for reaching out to us. The balances you show in your first photo are normal enough, but I can't tell specifically what you have without seeing them removed. If your take-out clips are rusted then you will need to replace them in order to get these out of the window. It has to be done sooner or later, anyway. I recommend the 16-002, though this is an educated guess. Let me know if your take out clips are different.
I don't know about the other window. You mention that it has a line but I don't know what that means. I can't help without seeing the balance itself, unfortunately.
I didn't realize the balance was physically blocking the take out clip. There's no way to remove either the balance or the window sash if that's the case. You need to find a way to press the balance down and under the clip. In my experience that usually just requires using extra elbow grease. If that doesn't work, try lubricating the track around it to see if that loosens it up.
If all else fails, then you should probably contact a local professional to come out and do the repair for you. The balance has to go under the take out clip. That's the only way.
