It sounds like you need new balances, yes. Please show me a picture of the balance in question. Please also give me the length of the tube (not counting the two end caps). Please also pull down the bottom nylon fitting and tell me what color the spring tip is painted. Thanks!

here is the info you needed

springs are 20" long
colors are black and purple both the same lenght
upstairs windows springs 17" purple
and 18 1/2" red
also will need the plastic runner that the window hooks into

Oh, I see. I apologize for the confusion, I thought you had a different type of balance!

The part you have pictured resembles our 15-104 friction shoe. I believe you can use this as a replacement. I'm afraid we cannot replace the springs themselves, though. You would need to contact a local mill work who still makes wood windows and have them replace the jambs.

I have a caradco window from the 80s. I need new friction shoes but the ones I have do not match the one in this post. Notice the ridge rather than the intention.

I'm sorry to say that we don't sell a friction shoe with that ridge. The 15-104 remains the only part we sell that would replace this.

I'm not sure how much of an impact that ridge would make on how well our part replaces it. Is there any particular function it serves that would prevent the 15-104 from working?

The depth of the track does not allow your part to fit into the track. In other words, the sides of your part hit the sash. If it had the single ridge and not the two side ridges, it would fit.

Thanks for clarifying. That is unfortunate. The bad news is that this is the only friction shoe our company can supply at this time. These are used on very old windows, and repair parts for this kind of window are very difficult to get a hold of. In most cases they aren't even made anymore, so options are very limited.

I'm very sorry for the inconvenience.
